Jay-Z Takes Super Bowl Halftime Stage
For seven years he picked the headliners. On February 14, 2027, the man behind the modern halftime show finally becomes the headliner himself.
The Announcement Lands on Monday Night
The news broke on Monday, October 26, ahead of the Monday night game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation confirmed together that Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The teaser that travelled with the announcement leaned on a goat theme, and the reaction online split the way it always splits with him, half celebration and half argument about who else deserved the call.

In his own statement, Jay-Z framed the booking as a full circle run, pointing back to his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt and calling the chance to stand on that stage after thirty years of music and culture a dream. That timeline is real. He closed his anniversary shows at the same stadium only days earlier, so SoFi gets him twice in a matter of months, first for the catalogue celebration and then for the biggest television stage in American sports.
The Producer Steps Into His Own Show
What makes this booking different from any other halftime pick is the business behind it. Roc Nation has partnered with the NFL on entertainment since 2019, and the company has helped produce every halftime show since the 2020 game. The list of headliners under that run includes Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, and Bad Bunny. Roc Nation also produced Kendrick Lamar in 2025, a performance widely reported as the most watched halftime show in history and an Emmy winner for music direction.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league had one request when the Roc Nation deal was first signed, that Jay-Z would take the stage himself one day when the moment felt right to him. Reports on the announcement note that Jay-Z pushed back on that idea at the start, telling Goodell the partnership was not about booking himself. Seven years later the moment apparently feels right, and Roc Nation will executive produce a show starring its own founder, with Hamish Hamilton directing.
Why This Booking Carries Weight
The resume behind the pick is hard to argue with. Jay-Z was the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he holds 25 Grammy Awards, and he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. His catalogue runs from the street reporting of his debut through The Blueprint, The Black Album and 4:44, which gives a halftime producer something most headliners cannot offer, three decades of records that different generations know word for word.
The open questions are the fun part. Nobody knows the setlist, the guests or the staging yet, and his recent anniversary run showed how deep his guest bench runs, from family moments to West Coast legends on the same bill. A halftime show gives him roughly thirteen minutes to compress all of that into one statement. If the SoFi finale proved anything, it is that he understands sequencing better than almost anyone alive. February will test that skill in front of the largest audience of his career.
