This Week in Hip Hop: 5 Things Everyone Is Talking About

Trending Now - This Week in Hip Hop

Chart droughts, TikTok resurrections, viral AI challenges, and two long-overdue number ones. Here is what mattered this week and what I think about it.

01

Hip-Hop's Chart Drought

Here is a wild stat: so far in 2026, only one rapper has had lead billing on a Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit. If that holds through December, it will be the first time since 1988 that rap managed one or fewer top 10 leaders in a year. The genre that runs the culture can barely crack the charts.

My take: Charts never measured the culture anyway. The most important rap records of the last decade didn't need top 10. But it does tell you the industry machine behind rap is not what it was. Independents, take notes. The lane is wide open.

An 8-Year-Old Song Just Hit #1

Dominic Fike wrote "Babydoll" as a demo back in 2018. This week it hit number one on Spotify globally, eight years later, because TikTok covers and remixes brought it back from the dead. He didn't re-record it. He didn't remix it. The internet just decided.

My take: This is the realest music industry story of the year. Your old songs are not dead, they are just waiting. Every artist sitting on a catalog needs to understand this. Post the old stuff. You never know which one wakes up.
03

The "Hotel Lobby" AI Challenge

Quavo and Takeoff's "Hotel Lobby" is viral again thanks to an AI challenge sweeping timelines. A whole new generation is discovering how cold those Migos flows were, and Quavo just dropped his third solo album QRÖMELIFE on October 2nd. Timing is everything.

My take: Nostalgia plus AI is a cheat code right now. And respect to Quavo for having new music ready the moment the wave hit. That is how you catch lightning instead of watching it.

Lil Baby's "Dead Fresh" Won't Miss

20 million YouTube views in two months. 70 million Spotify streams. Lil Baby's "Dead Fresh" is one of the hottest records in the country right now, no debate. Atlanta keeps producing.

My take: Consistency. That is the whole story. Lil Baby drops, it connects, repeat. No gimmicks, no viral dance needed. Just records that hit. There is a lesson in that for everybody chasing algorithms.

Jhené Aiko's First #1 Album

Jhené Aiko just earned the first Billboard 200 number one of her career with "Westside Whimsey." Years into a career of critically loved music, and this is the first time she has topped the album chart. She and Drake are currently the only hip-hop based artists in the top 10.

My take: Longevity wins. She stayed true to her sound for years and the moment found her. If you are an artist feeling behind schedule, remember this one. Your timeline is your own.
