Today in Hip Hop: November 1
November opens Hip Hop History Month, and the date carries heavyweight releases from 1988 to 2024.
Hip Hop History Month Opens
November 1 marks the start of National Hip Hop History Month, a month set aside to honour what the genre built and what it keeps building. Few dates on the calendar make a better opening day, because November 1 has been delivering landmark rap records for close to four decades.
The releases below stretch from the golden era to the streaming era, and they share one trait. Every one of them still gets played, quoted or sampled today, which is the real test of a history month entry.
Slick Rick Tells The Great Adventures
Slick Rick released his debut album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick on November 1, 1988, and rap storytelling was never quite the same after it. The album topped the Billboard R&B and Hip Hop Albums chart, powered by records like Children's Story and Mona Lisa that turned narrative into a headline skill.

Rick arrived with the eye patch, the chains and a storyteller's timing that made every verse feel like a short film. Generations of MCs studied the way he set a scene, landed a twist and kept the humour inside the lesson.
Brand Nubian And Lords Hold The Funk
November 1, 1994 was a stacked release day. Brand Nubian dropped their third album Everything Is Everything, which reached number 13 on the Billboard Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums chart, while Lords of the Underground released their second album Keepers of the Funk, which climbed to number 57 on the Billboard 200 and number 16 on the R&B and Hip Hop chart. Da Lench Mob also released Planet of da Apes the same day.

The early nineties rewarded groups with a point of view, and both of these records had one. Brand Nubian brought knowledge and bounce in equal measure, and the Lords brought a raw New Jersey energy that kept the funk in the title and in the drums.
Wale Delivers On Ambition
Wale released his second studio album Ambition on November 1, 2011, and it finished the week at number one on both the Billboard Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums chart and the Top Rap Albums chart. After a debut that critics felt undersold his talent, Ambition was the sound of an artist betting on his pen and winning.

The album balanced radio reach with the spoken word roots that made Wale stand out in the blog era, and it reset his career at the exact moment the game was deciding who from that class would last.
Gang Starr Returns One More Time
Gang Starr released One of the Best Yet on November 1, 2019, a seventh and final album built by DJ Premier around the voice of Guru, years after Guru had passed. The guest list read like a respect roll call, with Q-Tip, M.O.P., Talib Kweli, J. Cole and Royce da 5'9 all stepping in, and the album reached number 82 on the Billboard 200.

Posthumous albums are usually a risk to a legacy. This one protected it, because Premier treated every vocal like an heirloom and built the record the way Gang Starr records were always built, with patience and swing.
Rod Wave Preaches Ghetto Gospel
The same November 1 in 2019 carried a debut from the other end of the timeline. Rod Wave released Ghetto Gospel, the first album of his career, and it peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200 on its way to Platinum certification. Earl Sweatshirt also chose that date for his Feet of Clay EP, making the day a bridge between eras.

Rod Wave sang pain like testimony and found an audience that had been waiting for exactly that honesty. Ghetto Gospel opened the door for a run that turned street soul into arena business.
Lil Uzi Vert Launches Eternal Atake 2
Lil Uzi Vert released Eternal Atake 2, their fourth studio album, on November 1, 2024, and it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. Sequels to beloved albums carry unfair expectations, and Uzi leaned straight into the comparison by returning to the world that made them a star.

The release kept November 1 current for a new generation of fans, the same way Slick Rick made the date matter 36 years earlier. The calendar keeps stacking proof that this is one of rap's favourite release days.
